Sheffield Cathedral - Guidelines and Information for Visiting Choirs

Choice of Music

  • The Cathedral follows the new Common Worship lectionary for the Church of England.  The Liturgical Week of your visit is indicated on the “Choice of Music” form, which will be sent to you after you have arranged to sing.  Please choose music that is appropriate for the season or that has general use.

  • Psalms are taken from the Book of Common Prayer.  Please choose your own chant and pointing.  Plainchant psalms are acceptable.

  • Hymns are sung from the New English Hymnal.  Please do not choose alternative tunes.

  • The readings, psalms and hymn for your visit will be indicated on the “Choice of Music” form.

  • Final responses should be sung to the music provided.  You are welcome to use our copies for services.

  • Evensong should not last longer than 45 minutes, whilst the Mass should not last more than 75 minutes. Music should be chosen accordingly.

  • Responses should be chosen so that they do not need to be rehearsed with the clergy.

  • We aim to keep music at the Cathedral at a high standard.  Please choose music that is well within your choir’s ability.

  • If you would like to perform something that would not normally fall within our guidelines we will be happy to consider it.  Please ensure that you ask well in advance.

Use of the Organ

  • Organ playing in any cathedral is a big responsibility, and it is most important that the  organ playing is to a very high standard.  However, we encourage choirs to bring their own organist.   Please remember that the organ is fairly large and that practice time is limited.  A specification of the organ is included with this information.

Dress for Services

  • Choirs are invited to wear robes for services.  Shoes should be black, and any clothes that are visible beneath the robes (socks, trousers) should be smart and preferably dark.  Choirs that do not wear robes must dress in smart formal clothes (e.g. lounge suits for men).

Parking

  • There is nowhere for a coach to park in the immediate vicinity of the Cathedral, but it is possible to be dropped off quickly and collected either in front of the Cathedral forecourt or in Campo Lane.  There is parking available for cars at the Bank Street NCP on Campo Lane behind the Cathedral.  The Cathedral has a small car park, and we may be able to accommodate a minibus or a few cars.  Please telephone the vergers (on the Cathedral number) to arrange this.

Places to Eat

  • There are several good pubs in Campo Lane ; there are several sandwich shops close by, and “Pollards” beside the Cathedral serves light meals during Saturday lunchtimes. The “Bankers Draft” at the end of Campo Lane is especially good for large groups.
